Introduction & Background
Moonstruck Astronaut is a not-for-profit community theatre company based in Newport, Shropshire. Our mission is to bring the local community of Newport and surrounding areas together through theatre projects and foster friendship, self-expression, belonging and confidence, first with our primary-school age children, then extending to young people and adults in time. We run the Newport Youth Theatre for 7-13 year olds and outdoor ‘Drama in the Forest’ workshops for 6-12 year olds. The theatre company’s work is expanding and this is a very exciting time to join us.
The Spring and Summer Drama in the Forests (DNF) are outdoor 4-day & 5-day drama/ cross-arts workshops on the Events site of Wrekin Forest School (WFS), with 20-23 children, of mixed ages (6-12 yrs), abilities and drama experience, run by Moonstruck Astronaut theatre company. We have been awarded an Arts Council National Lottery Project Grant to run the Drama in the Forests 2024, this workshop leader role is paid for by this grant.

Role description:
- To be music lead specialist and facilitate a music workshop at both DNFs and support the final day when we have a triumphant sharing of our communal creativity to parents/guardians/supporters.
- For the Spring DNF, the children work in small groups to create an Aesops Fable with music. The music specialist would lead a morning music workshop as an introduction to music making and incorporating music in storytelling / performing an animal tale (in terms of adding sound effects, atmosphere, animal motifs for eg).
- For the Summer DNF, the children will work in small groups to create fairytales with music. The music specialist would lead a morning music workshop as an introduction to music making and incorporating music in storytelling / performing a fairy tale.
- To attend and contribute to four delivery team meetings, with drama, movement, arts and craft, forest school specialists, one before and one after each DNF. Meetings to be held in March, April/May, July and September / October.
Fee: DNF Music Artist – 3 days delivery + 0.5 days planning meets @ £250 per day – £875 in total.

Spring DNF week: Mon 25th – Thursday 28th March, 8.30am – 4.30pm* (*until 5.30pm Thursday 28th March for performance) **Music specialist to ideally attend Monday 11th March 6-8pm staff team meeting in Wellington, to lead Music workshop Weds 27th March morning 9.30-12am (arrive by 9am) & return to support mini plays Thursday 28th March 9am to 5pm & attend a feedback meeting in April/May**
Summer DNF week: Mon 5th – Friday 9th August, 8.30am – 4.30pm* (*until 5.30pm Friday 9th August for performance) **There will be a staff team meeting in July and after in September/October to attend, to lead a half-day music workshop on Weds 7th August & support on Friday 9th August 9am to 5pm**
Please note this role suits a practicing community music artist who enjoys co-creating and collaborating with other arts specialists, forest school specialists and facilitating children aged 6 to 12 years old on a unique outdoors project, funded by Arts Council England. We would ideally like a music practitioner who is local to Shropshire / Staffordshire so they can easily attend staff team meetings.
